WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN IMPORTING GOODS

THESE IMPORT DUTIES ARE PAYABLE

Customs: Instead of the third country duty rate, imports from different countries and groups of countries, e.g. EFTA, European Economic Area, developing countries, can often benefit from preferential tariffs or duty exemptions if it can be shown that the products are also of the origin of the supplier countries concerned.

Import VAT:
This is a special form of VAT levied at a standard rate of currently 19%. For importers who are entitled to deduct input tax, the levy does not constitute a cost factor, since the full amount of import VAT paid is deductible as input tax.

Excise duties:
(only on some products such as tobacco, alcohol, sparkling wine, coffee, beer, mineral oils)

 

SPECIFIC IMPORT AUTHORISATIONS

As a general rule, no licence is required to import goods, but there are import licensing requirements and sometimes quantitative restrictions (e.g. in the textile and steel sectors) for certain products originating in certain countries. The import list must be used to identify the products concerned. The licensing authorities are the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (for commercial goods) and the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (for agricultural products).

 

THIS COULD OTHERWISE BLOCK YOUR IMPORT

Certain products may generally not be marketed in the Federal Republic of Germany or may only be marketed in the Federal Republic of Germany under certain conditions. This applies equally to domestic and imported goods. For example, there are internationally protected animal and plant species – because they are threatened with extinction. As a result, certain leather goods, for example, may not be imported or may only be imported under certain conditions.

 

SPECIAL IMPORT DOCUMENTS

There are various import documents for the import of goods. For example, you need a commercial invoice from foreign suppliers. An import declaration is also required when goods are transferred. This requires a customs declaration, which is also a customs application. You can usually submit this electronically. For consignments of goods up to a value of EUR 1,000, the oral customs declaration is sufficient.
