Air freight

Air freight made easy

Air freight is booming: in the last 20 years, the volume of freight handled at German airports has risen by 54%. A distinction is made between belly freight — the additional load in normal passenger aircraft — and transport in special cargo aircraft. In both cases, certain specifications regarding permissible quantities, dimensions and, in particular, packaging must be observed.

THE ADVANTAGES OF TRANSPORTING GOODS BY PLANE

The transport of goods by air offers a number of advantages, particularly in the international shipping of goods: generally high safety standards, short transport times over long distances and the precise, up-to-the-minute organization of international flight operations, which almost eliminates delays or disruptions. Ideal especially for particularly time-critical or valuable goods!

Many CEP service providers and air freight forwarders operate their own cargo airlines. This means that secure supply chains can be organized more crisis-proof with air freight than with other means of transport.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DIMENSIONS AND PACKAGING

The permissible height dimension is based on the size of the aircraft’s cargo hold – from just 86 cm in a Boeing 737 to 3 metres in a Boeing 747 F. However, all aircraft have the same packaging requirements, which must be designed to withstand impacts of three times the weight of the cargo as well as accelerations and vibrations of up to 500 Hertz. Added to this are the stresses caused by stacking different pieces of freight. Are you unsure whether your goods can be shipped by air freight or how they need to be packed? Talk to us directly!

CAN DANGEROUS GOODS BE SHIPPED AS AIR FREIGHT?

The transport of dangerous goods is generally subject to strict regulations. (see also our dangerous goods page). In principle, shipment is possible with any means of transport. However, transporting dangerous goods by air carries poses the greatest risk and is therefore subject to even stricter regulations and quantity limits, which are summarised in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
