With the ‘Sustainability Surcharge’, which is levied on every flown international DHL Express shipment, DHL covers the additional costs for the use of SAF and other climate-friendly measures. For many companies, the majority of their environmental footprint is created by the value-adding steps that take place before and after the actual production (Scope 3 of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)). Scope 3 includes all indirect emissions that arise in a company’s value chain, for example downstream transport and distribution.

The CSRD is an EU directive that requires companies to disclose their sustainability performance in detail and to account for emissions along the entire supply chain. The DHL GoGreen PLUS service helps companies to comply with these new sustainability requirements by reducing their environmental footprint before it even arises.

The GoGreen PLUS service applies to all international so-called ‘time definite’ DHL Express shipments that are transported by air. International Economy and national DHL shipments are excluded.

There is a surcharge per kilogram for the GoGreen PLUS service. The amount of the surcharge varies depending on the country of origin, ranging from €0.18/kg in Switzerland and Spain to €0.33/kg in Germany. This surcharge will be listed transparently as a ‘Sustainability Surcharge’ in addition to the regular transport price on your invoice.

The new EU CSRD directive requires most companies to report extensively on their sustainability efforts. The reporting requirement for large companies will apply from the 2024 financial year onwards. This is to ensure that global standards for calculating and reporting emissions are met.

While kerosene is produced from crude oil, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is produced from alternative resources with an improved sustainability profile.
